Young Player of the Year, Robbie Cundy Blow, and Proud Cheltonians – Cheltenham Town Boss Steve Cotterill Reflects After Newport County Win

Cheltenham Town secured a gritty 1-0 victory over Newport County AFC, a testament to resilience and determination from both sides. “It was a tough game, as expected when you’re facing a side fighting for survival,” said manager Steve Cotterill. Despite recent midweek exertions and Newport having a full week’s rest, Cheltenham’s players showed grit and endurance to come out on top.

Cotterill praised his squad’s character amid a challenging fixture schedule. “Pitch size and fatigue can make a difference, but our boys stood firm today. It’s a tough period with multiple games in quick succession, but they’re managing well.” Conceding a lack of sharpness but impressed by moments of quality, he highlighted a slick move leading to the winning goal.

The breakthrough came from a well-executed combination, with Mo Faal setting up George Miller for a precise finish. Cotterill commended Mo’s contribution and the effectiveness of the attack. However, the team suffered a blow as Robbie Cundy went off with a suspected foot injury. “He had an X-ray, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look good at the moment,” Cotterill shared, expressing disappointment at the prospect of losing such an important defensive presence.

Young talents were also in the spotlight. Jonathan Tomkinson, just 24, has impressed by playing across the back four, making him a strong contender for Young Player of the Year alongside Jake Bickerstaff. “Both have been excellent signings, bringing versatility and energy to the squad,” the manager noted.

George Nurse’s return after a long absence was positive, with Cotterill cautiously optimistic despite some cramping late on. The win marked Cheltenham’s third consecutive victory and pushed the club over the 50-point mark—a milestone Cotterill welcomed but coupled with his usual ambition. “I thought 44 points would keep us up, then 43, but now we want more. Fans and players alike can be proud at this moment in time.”

Reflecting on Robbie Cundy’s impact since rejoining the squad, Cotterill praised his professionalism and presence in defence. “He’s been outstanding, a crucial figure who does all the tough defensive work and even has great feet for his size. He’s like the club’s Mark ‘Boka’ Freeman, vital in the air and commanding at the back.”

With back-to-back home wins building momentum, Cotterill urged his team to maintain their level of performance. “The lads have done brilliantly, but we have to keep it going for a little while longer.”
