“You Have to Win Matches Like This to Win the League,” Says Forest Green Rovers Boss Robbie Savage After Draw with Solihull Moors

Forest Green Rovers’ manager Robbie Savage expressed his frustration following a 1-1 home draw against Solihull Moors, describing the result as two points lost rather than one gained.

The visitors took an early lead thanks to Alex Whitmore’s first-half strike, but Forest Green fought back in the second period when Nick Haughton’s precise finish leveled the score.

Savage was clear about what needs to improve for his team to clinch the league title. “We’re not clinical enough, not ruthless enough. If you want to win the league, you must be winning games like today’s,” he said. “I keep saying the same thing: we need someone who can consistently convert chances inside the six-yard box.”

Despite playing attractive, attacking football that entertained a lively home crowd, Savage believes the team’s inability to capitalize on chances is costing valuable points. “We’re joint top of the league, but eventually, these missed opportunities will hurt us.”

The opening goal by Solihull came after a loose clearance from a free kick set Whitmore up for a powerful strike beyond Forest Green’s goalkeeper Harry Isted. “It was a long ball, a header, a deflection, and a goal—too many mistakes in the air and a lack of defensive aggression,” the manager lamented.

At halftime, Savage made a tactical change by introducing Tre Pemberton for Isaac Moore, which allowed Tom Knowles to shift to left back and Jili Buyabu to push forward, with Haughton playing in his favored attacking midfield role. “You don’t need to shout at halftime; you offer solutions. Tre’s impact was outstanding after coming on.”

Solihull’s right-back James Clarke made two crucial goal-line clearances just before Whitwell and Pemberton threatened the net, showing strong defensive determination.

The match also drew attention to some questionable refereeing decisions benefiting both sides, which even led to moments of shared laughter between the two managers. Savage respected the challenges referees face and declined to criticize the officials.

Forest Green Rovers now face a break in league play until December 20, when they visit Yeovil Town. Before then, they host Weston-super-Mare in the FA Trophy. Notably, former Forest Green midfielder Adam May, who recently transferred to Weston, is expected to return to The New Lawn, adding an intriguing subplot to the cup tie.

“It should be a competitive match. Both teams are in great form, and we plan to field a strong side because we want to advance in the competition,” Savage added.
