Wotton-Under-Edge is set to regain its regular bus service, a development welcomed by local MP Claire Young as a significant step toward reviving the region’s weakened transport infrastructure. The Y8 bus route extension will reconnect the town to essential services, providing scheduled transportation for both commuters and school pupils. Additionally, the 525 route will be redirected to link The Birds estate with Yate shopping centre, enhancing connectivity for residents.
These improvements come after collaborative discussions between the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and South Gloucestershire Council, which have faced mounting pressure to halt years of service reductions. Claire Young, Liberal Democrat MP for Thornbury and Yate, recently engaged with the new regional mayor, Helen Godwin, to advocate for comprehensive enhancements to the area’s transport system.
“This progress with the Y8 and 525 bus routes represents a vital step in repairing our threadbare local bus network,” said Young. “For too long, communities have suffered from cutbacks, losing reliable and regular services. These initial gains will make a real difference for people traveling to work, school, or around Yate.”

Despite this success, Young emphasized that the campaign continues: “The fight isn’t over. I will keep collaborating with the West of England Mayor and South Gloucestershire Council to secure sustainable, long-term bus services that meet the needs of our communities.”
Councillor Chris Willmore, cabinet member for infrastructure, echoed the positive outlook: “This extension of the temporary service is a huge step forward. While we continue campaigning for permanent routes, these changes are crucial for linking villages, Yate, Wotton, and Charfield Station.”
Together, these advancements mark important progress in restoring public transport services and highlight the ongoing commitment to a more connected, accessible future for the region.
