World’s Healthiest Vegetable Revealed: Watercress Tops the List and Costs Just £1

Scientists have identified the world’s most nutrient-dense vegetable, and the surprising winner is watercress. According to research published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), watercress earned a flawless nutrient density score of 100, outpacing popular greens like Chinese cabbage, chard, beetroot greens, and spinach.

A member of the Brassicaceae family, which includes cabbage, kale, radish, and mustard, watercress (Latin name Nasturtium officinale) is known for its distinctive peppery flavor—earning the nickname “nose twister.” While watercress may not be widely used everywhere, it is a long-standing staple in Britain and widely available in supermarkets for about £1 per bag. The Hampshire town of Alresford, known as the “watercress capital of the UK,” celebrates this leafy green with an annual festival.

Dr Amy Lee, head of nutrition at Nucific, highlights watercress’s impressive health benefits: “It’s especially high in vitamin A and potassium, surpassing typical lettuces.” It also packs ample amounts of vitamins C, E, K, B6, plus calcium and iron.

The CDC’s study analyzed over 40 “powerhouse fruits and vegetables,” selected for their strong links to reducing chronic disease risks. Using nutrient density scores, the researchers found that cruciferous and green leafy vegetables consistently ranked highest. Watercress stood out among cruciferous veggies alongside Chinese cabbage and kale.

Typically enjoyed fresh in salads and soups, watercress can also be used in inventive recipes like vibrant pesto, offering a flavorful boost with minimal prep time.

This research showcases the exceptional nutritional value of everyday greens like watercress, proving that the key to a healthy diet can be both affordable and easy to find.
