‘World’s creepiest’ McDonald’s reveals ancient Roman treasures beneath its floor

Most customers visit McDonald’s focusing on the menu, rarely considering what might lie beneath their feet. However, one extraordinary McDonald’s branch in Italy offers an unexpectedly dramatic answer - featuring an ancient Roman road and two 2,000-year-old human skeletons preserved under its floorboards.

Situated in Frattocchie, a small town approximately 12 miles south of Rome, this particular McDonald’s has become an unlikely tourist attraction after footage showcasing its remarkable interior circulated widely on social media. Unlike typical branches, its floor incorporates glass panels that provide diners a direct view of the archaeological site preserved below.

Travel content creator Jordan Egbert recently visited the site and shared his experience online.

He recounted, “At first glance, it looks like a normal McDonald’s, right? But then you come over here and see glass in the floor. Okay, a little unusual, but nothing major. Then you look down, and you see exactly what that is.”

Beneath the floor lies an extraordinary discovery. During construction in 2014, workers uncovered a branch of the Appian Way, one of ancient Rome’s oldest and most significant roads. Alongside the road, two human skeletons were also found.

Faced with the choice to pause development or preserve the findings, a compromise was reached, allowing the restaurant to coexist alongside the ruins. According to Food Republic, McDonald’s invested an additional $315,000 to integrate the archaeological site into the design, employing glass floor panels to keep the ancient road and remains visible to visitors.

Jordan added, “They also found bodies here and decided to preserve them. Not just one, but two. Imagine eating your burger right above a skeleton.”

These glass panels are located along the counter where customers queue, meaning visitors inevitably come face to face with the remains. Reports from the Mirror confirm that skeletons are visible through the floor, though there is some debate as to whether these are the original remains or high-quality replicas designed to protect the authentic artefacts.

Regardless, the unique setup has transformed the Frattocchie McDonald’s into more than a fast-food outlet. Visitors now come specifically to view this unique blend of history and modern dining, with online reactions largely positive.

Commenting on Jordan’s footage, one viewer said, “Ridiculously cool.” Another challenged the “creepy” label, stating, “I wouldn’t call it ‘creepy.’ Fascinating is more like it.” A third added, “Not to be controversial, but I think it’s very historic and cool.”

McDonald’s has been approached for comment regarding this unusual establishment.
