England’s Seniors team, featuring three former Cheltenham Town players and ex-chairman Andy Wilcox, lifted the Seniors World Cup after a commanding 4-0 victory over France in the tournament’s final in Thailand. This triumph marks England’s ninth title in the 18th edition of the competition.
The standout performers included Jamie Cureton and Barry Hayles, both of whom found the net, while Alex Russell also contributed as part of the winning squad. The tournament saw eight nations compete, a tradition stemming from its 2006 inception aimed at revitalizing tourism in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.
The English squad was bolstered by experienced names such as Gareth Barry, Sean Davis, David Norris, Kevin Ellison, Lee Hendrie, and Luke Chambers. Their route to glory was impressive: opening with a 2-0 win against Thailand, followed by a 4-1 victory over Taiwan, and a 3-0 triumph against the USA. In the semifinals, England outclassed Australia with a 5-2 win, setting the stage for their decisive final.

In the final match, alongside Cureton and Hayles, Aaron O’Connor and Karl Duguid also scored, sealing a comprehensive win and allowing England to retain their crown.
The tournament format required each team to field a mix of experience: three players aged 40-44, four players aged 45-49, and three players aged 50 or older simultaneously, with rolling substitutions permitted for the over-50s. Matches were played in four 20-minute quarters, emphasizing skill, stamina, and strategic play.
This latest success adds to England’s rich history in the Seniors World Cup and highlights the enduring talent emerging from former Cheltenham Town players.
