World Cup Winners! Ex-Cheltenham Town Quartet Celebrate England’s Seniors Glory

Three former Cheltenham Town players, along with ex-chairman Andy Wilcox, celebrated a remarkable victory as England lifted the Seniors World Cup in Thailand. In the final, England emphatically defeated France 4-0 to claim the 18th edition of this prestigious tournament.

Jamie Cureton and Barry Hayles both found the net, while Alex Russell contributed as part of the winning squad. The tournament featured eight nations and was originally established in 2006 to encourage tourism following the 2004 tsunami.

Other notable players helping England clinch the title included Gareth Barry, Sean Davis, David Norris, Kevin Ellison, Lee Hendrie, and Luke Chambers. This victory marked England’s ninth Seniors World Cup triumph.

England’s path to glory was dominant from the start, with a 2-0 win over hosts Thailand in their opening Group A match, followed by a 4-1 victory against Taiwan and a 3-0 win over the USA. In the semi-finals, they overcame Australia 5-2 before cruising to a convincing win in the final.

Other scorers in the decisive final were Aaron O’Connor and Karl Duguid, sealing England’s successful defense of the trophy.

The tournament’s structure requires each team to field three players aged 40 to 44, four players aged 45 to 49, and three players aged 50 or older simultaneously. Matches are played in 20-minute quarters, with rolling substitutions allowed for players over 50, ensuring fast-paced and competitive action throughout.
