Work Begins on New Affordable Housing Development in Stroud

Construction has commenced on a new affordable housing project located on an underused plot in the Cashes Green area of Stroud. The development will feature seven homes: five two-storey houses and two flats on Queen’s Drive, delivering much-needed, sustainable housing for the local community.

Designed by Trower Davies and Quattro Design architects and managed by construction firm Speller Metcalfe, the project aims to transform the site into a vibrant residential area with landscaped communal spaces, improved pedestrian access, and dedicated parking. Each home will be built to rigorous environmental standards, incorporating air source heat pumps, solar panels, and energy-efficient features to achieve EPC A ratings.

Following a ground-breaking ceremony in January, site preparation and groundwork are now underway. Local officials underline the significance of this development as part of Stroud District Council’s wider strategy to address the district’s affordable housing shortage while promoting sustainability and biodiversity.

Cllr Gary Luff, Chair of the Housing Committee at Stroud District Council, emphasized the council’s commitment: “Affordable housing delivery remains a key priority for Stroud District Council. These new homes will provide modern, sustainable living options for local residents and reflect our dedication to environmental standards and community well-being.”

Mark Eaton, Divisional Director at Speller Metcalfe, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We are proud to begin work at Queens Drive in Cashes Green, supporting the council’s mission to deliver high-quality, energy-efficient homes that serve the community’s needs.”

This project is part of an extensive program by Stroud District Council and Speller Metcalfe, which includes additional developments currently underway at Gloucester Street, Bradley Street, Cambridge Avenue, and a major housing scheme at Glebelands, with completions scheduled through 2027. Together, these initiatives demonstrate a strong, ongoing investment in affordable, sustainable housing to benefit the residents of Stroud District.
