Dan Lategan delivered a remarkable maiden first-class century as Worcestershire clinched an exhilarating eight-wicket win against Gloucestershire on the final day of a captivating Rothesay County Championship Second Division encounter at Cheltenham.
Tasked with chasing 279 runs in a minimum of 60 overs, Worcestershire achieved their target comfortably with 4.5 overs remaining, powered by a colossal opening partnership of 244 between Lategan and Jake Libby. Libby crafted a masterful innings, remaining unbeaten on 107 from 151 balls, striking 12 fours.
However, it was the 20-year-old Lategan, appearing in just his twelfth Championship match, who truly shone. The elegant South African left-hander amassed 144 runs off 163 deliveries, featuring 17 fours and five sixes-four of these sixes were hit off India spinner Sai Kishore.

Earlier in the match, Gloucestershire’s James Bracey produced a resilient 127, joining forces with Ollie Price for a 102-run partnership. Price contributed a stylish 77 as Gloucestershire declared at 395-7, setting the stage for an exhilarating conclusion to the Festival. Worcestershire earned 20 points from the win, while bottom-ranked Gloucestershire secured three despite enduring their eighth defeat in nine games.
Worcestershire sought to dominate early with the new ball, taken on the second over of the day. Yet the pitch had become largely unresponsive to seam bowling, allowing Gloucestershire’s batsmen to extend their advantage, with Bracey reaching fifty from 63 balls.
Price’s fluent strokeplay helped forge a century partnership in 22 overs, shifting momentum in Gloucestershire’s favour. Following Price’s dismissal by Ben Allison, a quick succession of wickets saw Gloucestershire at 310-6, with Worcestershire reasserting pressure through Tom Taylor and Beyers Swanepoel.
Bracey remained steadfast, notching his nineteenth first-class century and third of the season from 128 balls. He guided Gloucestershire safely through a 70-run stand with Ed Middleton before Swanepoel wrapped up the innings with figures of 4 for 49 from 22 overs. Gloucestershire’s declaration came soon after lunch.
In pursuit, Kishore began with the new ball, creating tight pressure early on. Lategan survived an early edge dropped by Tommy Boorman at short leg, then, alongside Libby, put on 50 runs in 12 overs, laying a strong foundation.
Lategan’s confident hitting included a massive six off Kishore over wide long-on, reaching his fifty from 48 balls. While Lategan dominated the scoring, Libby provided vital support, contributing 35 runs to the opening stand as Worcestershire reached tea without loss on 110.
Needing 169 runs off a minimum of 37 overs after tea, Worcestershire held the upper hand. Libby continued his solid form, reaching fifty from 82 balls.
Despite disciplined bowling from spinners Price, Middleton and Kishore, which increased the required run rate to above five per over, Lategan surpassed his previous best score of 89, securing his maiden first-class hundred from 132 balls with a boundary off Price.
Libby completed his century from 136 balls with a deft shot to third man, bringing Worcestershire close to victory, which they secured with 4.5 overs to spare.
