Woman Who Saved Village Playgroup After Desperate Knock at the Door Steps Down

Bev Fowler, the dedicated playgroup leader who rescued Woodchester Playgroup from closure nearly a decade ago, has stepped down after an emotional farewell. In 2016, Bev answered a desperate knock on her door from a parent seeking help when the previous leader left, putting the village playgroup’s future at risk. What began as a call for assistance soon became a passionate commitment to nurturing the children and families in the community.

Joined a year later by Cherril Wenban, who became deputy leader and special educational needs coordinator, Bev and Cherril formed the heart of Woodchester Playgroup—a charity-run, committee-managed setting. Their joint leadership led to a milestone achievement: a Good Ofsted rating in 2023.

After nine years, both Bev and Cherril decided to step down to focus more time on their families. At a moving farewell presentation, Rachel Lee, Chair of the Playgroup Committee, praised their unwavering dedication through every challenge, including the upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. “Thank you for everything you’ve given us. Bev, thank you for answering that knock at the door all those years ago, and for the countless ways you’ve enriched our playgroup,” she said.

Bev expressed her gratitude, describing the farewell as “overwhelming and very emotional.” She reflected on her time at the playgroup as a privilege, proud of the nurturing environment they created. Cherril echoed these sentiments, calling her work at Woodchester Playgroup “not just a job, but a passion,” and feeling fortunate to have witnessed so many children flourish.

Woodchester Playgroup, located on the grounds of Woodchester Endowed Church of England Primary School, has welcomed Sophie Cooper as the new leader starting in September. Sophie brings over 15 years of childcare experience, including two years managing Cashes Green Playgroup, along with a passion for early years education and the energy of a mother of two teenage boys. She looks forward to continuing the playgroup’s tradition of providing a fun, educational, and nurturing environment for the local community.
