Police have commended the remarkable bravery of a woman who spoke out against James Holder, co-founder of Superdry, after he was found guilty of raping her.
The 54-year-old multi-millionaire from Cheltenham entered the woman’s home uninvited following a night out, used her bathroom, and then fell asleep on her bed. After waking, he beckoned the woman—who was trying to rest in the lounge—into the bedroom and raped her.
Holder denied the charges, claiming the encounter was consensual, but a unanimous jury at Cirencester Courthouse convicted him last week.

This afternoon, at Bristol Crown Court, Holder was sentenced to eight years in prison—exactly four years after the assault occurred.
Detective Constable Elle MacLeod of Gloucestershire Police praised the survivor for her “strength and courage” in pursuing justice. Speaking outside the courtroom, she emphasized that “no one is above the law regardless of wealth or power” and affirmed the police commitment to holding offenders accountable.
“James Holder exploited the victim’s vulnerability and violated her privacy by committing one of the most devastating crimes imaginable against her in her own home,” said Det Con MacLeod. “The survivor’s bravery in coming forward, her unwavering commitment to the investigation, and her fearless testimony have been truly remarkable.”
She added that Holder’s conviction not only delivers justice for this woman but may also protect others from future harm.
The detective encouraged anyone affected by sexual violence to seek support and report offenses. She acknowledged the difficulty in coming forward, but reassured victims that Gloucestershire Constabulary’s dedicated team works closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to secure justice.
“For anyone who has suffered sexual violence, your voice matters. Never let fear silence you,” Det Con MacLeod quoted from the victim’s personal statement.
During sentencing, the survivor read a powerful personal statement addressing Holder: “Four years to the day since you took what was never yours—my choice, my dignity, my body. I refuse to soften that word, for it is the truth of your actions. I am still here, still standing, reclaiming every part of myself you tried to take. The weight of what happened should be yours to carry, not mine.”
