Woman Endures Months of Suffering After Man Brutally Assaults Her

Redwan Karim of Regent Street, Gloucester, has been sentenced after violently assaulting a woman in a series of brutal attacks that caused her severe physical and psychological harm. On July 30, 2024, Karim visited the victim at her home and then coerced her into a taxi to a hotel in Cheltenham, where he launched a savage attack.

During the assault, the 31-year-old grabbed the woman by her hair. When she pushed him away, she fell, and Karim stamped forcefully on her head. He then punched her with such force that both her eardrums were perforated. Following the hotel attack, Karim continued his abuse in Gloucester by grabbing the victim’s hair while she was in his car.

The victim attempted to escape to her mother’s house, but Karim confronted her outside and tried to pull her back into the vehicle. Her mother intervened in time to rescue her. At the hospital, doctors found she was suffering from leaking cerebrospinal fluid from her ears, swelling, extensive bruising, a perforated right eardrum, jaw pain, and nausea.

Further investigations unveiled offensive messages on Karim’s phone dating back to November 2023, in which he threatened to injure the victim severely enough to require hospitalization.

The victim courageously shared her experience in a personal statement read aloud in court: “I feel empty, frustrated, and deeply unhappy. For seven months, my family watched me suffer through physical pain and mental anguish. I struggled with hearing loss and have been emotionally scarred. I no longer feel safe to go out with friends or see my family — my life has been frozen by fear.”

Karim initially pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious communications but changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial. He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for the assault, with an additional six months for malicious communications served concurrently. A 10-year restraining order was issued to protect the victim.

Detective Constable Sarah Mobbs praised the victim’s bravery and emphasized the seriousness of the crime: “This brutal attack inflicted lasting physical and mental harm. The victim showed extraordinary courage in coming forward. This sentence sends a strong message that such violence against women will not be tolerated. We remain committed to bringing offenders to justice.”
