Gloucester city centre is currently under an extended dispersal order as police intensify their efforts to address ongoing antisocial behaviour. This measure grants officers additional authority to manage and disrupt the activities of individuals causing harassment and distress in the area.
The Section 34 dispersal order came into effect at 8pm on Monday 24 August and will remain active until 8pm on Wednesday 26 August. It covers a designated zone within the city centre, bounded by Black Dog Way and Gouda Way to the north, Trier Way to the east, Llanthony Road and Castle Meads Way to the west, and St Ann Way and Trier Way to the south. The order was authorised by a senior police officer following numerous reports of disruptive behaviour affecting both the public and local business owners.
Under this order, officers have the power to direct individuals whose conduct is likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress to leave the area and refrain from returning until the order expires. Failure to comply with these directions may result in arrest for breaching the order.
Earlier today, on 25 August, a woman was arrested for violating the dispersal order and currently remains in police custody.
Acting Inspector Gareth Gladwin of the Local Policing Team stated: “We are taking assertive action to curb the behaviour of certain individuals within the city to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors. Alongside this dispersal order, our Neighbourhood Policing team conducted an operation yesterday targeting antisocial behaviour, shoplifting, and the use of illegal electric vehicles in the city centre.
“During these patrols, officers successfully intervened to break up a large fight, confiscated alcohol from 11 individuals, and arrested three people for shoplifting. Today’s arrest for breaching the Dispersal Order further demonstrates our commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment in Gloucester.”
Antisocial behaviour has increasingly become a focus for policing in Gloucester, with recent weeks seeing a rise in related incidents. The force has also stepped up patrols at Gloucester Park following reports from residents of frequent daily issues including drug and alcohol misuse.
Westgate city councillor Howard Hyman (Liberal Democrats) has highlighted concerns over the perceived lack of police presence both day and night in the city centre and at Gloucester Park, though the force has assured the public that targeted operations will continue in the coming days.
