Police in Gloucester are intensifying their efforts to combat antisocial behaviour in the city centre by extending a dispersal order, providing officers with enhanced powers to address those causing disruption and distress.
The Section 34 dispersal order was enacted at 8pm on Monday 24 August and is set to last until 8pm on Wednesday 26 August. It covers a defined area of the city centre, bounded by Black Dog Way and Gouda Way to the north, Trier Way to the east, Llanthony Road and Castle Meads Way to the west, and St Ann Way and Trier Way to the south. This measure was authorised by a senior police officer following multiple reports from both the public and local business owners concerning individuals engaging in behaviour that causes harassment and distress.
Under the order, police officers have the authority to direct any individual whose actions are likely to alarm or distress members of the public to leave the area and refrain from returning until the order expires. Failure to comply may result in arrest for breaching the dispersal order.

Earlier on Tuesday 25 August, officers arrested a woman for allegedly breaching the order; she remains in police custody as enquiries continue.
Acting Inspector Gareth Gladwin from the Local Policing Team stated: “We are taking decisive action to address the conduct of certain individuals in the city, in order to safeguard the public and maintain a welcoming environment.”
“Alongside this dispersal order, our Neighbourhood Policing team organised an operation yesterday targeting antisocial behaviour, shoplifting, and the use of illegal electric vehicles in the city centre.”
“During patrols, officers intervened to disperse a large altercation, confiscated alcohol from 11 individuals, and arrested three people on shoplifting charges. Today’s arrest for breaching the dispersal order further demonstrates our commitment to ensuring Gloucester remains a safe and pleasant place.”
Antisocial behaviour has been a significant concern in Gloucester in recent weeks. The police recently announced increased patrols in Gloucester Park following reports from local residents describing a month of near-daily incidents involving drug and alcohol misuse.
Westgate city councillor Howard Hyman (Liberal Democrat) expressed concerns over insufficient police presence both day and night in the city centre and Gloucester Park, although the police have promised targeted activity in coming days to address these issues.
Members of the public experiencing antisocial behaviour are encouraged to report incidents by calling the police on 101. In cases where a crime is actively in progress and offenders are present or nearby, the police advise calling 999 immediately.
