Erica Fielder stands by her husband Rob’s side as they battle a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer. The couple, who recently moved into their dream home in Newnham, had envisioned a bright future. But that dream was shattered when Rob was diagnosed with advanced Stage 4 lung cancer—a diagnosis that came after months of unexplained weight loss and a persistent cough.
Despite chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and multiple treatments including Gamma Knife radiosurgery for brain lesions, Rob’s cancer has spread to his bones, impacting his health profoundly. Adding to the struggle is a rare genetic mutation called Exon 20, found in Rob’s tumor—a mutation so uncommon in the UK that testing for it is rarely performed.
This mutation renders standard treatments ineffective, but there is hope in two promising drugs, Sunvozertinib and Furmonertinib, which could potentially extend Rob’s life. Unfortunately, these medications are not yet available on the NHS and must be imported from the USA under special license, with costs estimated at £15,000 per month.

With mounting medical expenses and limited financial options, Erica has taken the emotional step of launching a GoFundMe campaign. Since its inception on June 21, the fundraiser has raised over £22,000 in just four days, a testament to the generosity and support from the community.
“This response has been overwhelming,” Erica shared tearfully from Rob’s hospital room. “Rob was doing the washing up when we saw the fundraiser had reached £19,000. He broke down, saying he might live to see his 50th birthday.”
Together for 28 years, the childhood sweethearts continue to find strength in each other as they navigate Rob’s palliative care journey. Erica appeals for awareness and change, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive genetic testing on lung cancer biopsies in the UK.
“Our doctors have been incredible, but it’s frustrating that rare mutations like Rob’s aren’t routinely tested for here. Early and detailed diagnosis could change so many lives,” she explained.
While Rob has had to give up his passion for hockey due to two strokes caused by the illness, Erica remains resolute. The couple is determined to make every moment count, hopeful that with the life-extending treatment, Rob will celebrate many more birthdays to come.
