In a tragic case that stunned a community, 72-year-old Daryl Berman has been found guilty of murdering her husband of 27 years, David Berman, aged 84, who was recently diagnosed with dementia.
The fatal incident occurred last March at their home on Butterstile Lane, where David suffered a deadly stab wound to the chest. Daryl Berman maintained throughout the trial that his death was an accident, claiming he had fallen onto a small paring knife she had used during lunch. However, the jury was unconvinced after extensive deliberation.
The case unfolded as prosecutors presented evidence portraying the stabbing as a deliberate act. Home Office pathologist Dr. Philip Lumb testified that the nature of David’s injury was characteristic of homicide and highly unlikely to be caused by a simple fall. Further evidence included a defensive wound found on David’s finger, suggesting he tried to protect himself during the attack.

Despite a previously loving and supportive 27-year marriage without any history of domestic violence, the prosecution highlighted unusual behavior by Daryl Berman following her husband’s death. Family members described her as emotionless and overly detached in the days after the tragedy.
On the day of the incident, David had been at a play center with his daughter and great-granddaughter, his health seemingly stable despite his diagnosis. Daryl called emergency services at 1:55 pm reporting an injury, administering CPR over the phone before paramedics arrived. Her initial story was accepted by police, but doubts soon emerged, leading to her arrest five days later.
During police interviews, Daryl repeatedly asserted that she was unaware of how the fatal wound occurred, offering conflicting accounts and insisting her husband’s death was unintentional. In court, she broke down in tears, pleading that she loved her husband and had no reason to harm him.
The jury ultimately rejected her explanations and convicted her of murder after a week-long retrial at Minshull Street Crown Court. She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 3.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Sazeeda Ismail condemned Daryl Berman’s actions and deception, expressing sympathy for David Berman’s family during this harrowing time.
