Wife Convicted of Murdering Husband Diagnosed with Dementia

David Berman, 84, tragically lost his life in March last year after being fatally stabbed by his wife, Daryl Berman, 72, in their home on Butterstile Lane. David had recently been diagnosed with dementia, and the couple had shared a 27-year marriage described as loving and supportive, with no prior history of domestic violence.

Daryl Berman told police that David had accidentally fallen on a small paring knife she had been using, but prosecutors painted a different picture. They argued that the stabbing was deliberate, with reasons known only to her.

During a trial that spanned several hearings, Mrs. Berman maintained her innocence, insisting the fatal injury was accidental. However, after a week-long retrial at Minshull Street Crown Court, jurors concluded that she was guilty of murder.

On the day of the attack, Mrs. Berman called emergency services at 1:55 pm, reporting her husband was injured. Despite her efforts to administer CPR under guidance, David was pronounced dead at 2:39 pm.

The turning point in the case came when a senior pathologist, Dr. Philip Lumb, examined the fatal wound. Although an accidental fall was not impossible, it was deemed highly unlikely to have caused the severe chest injury. Moreover, David had a defensive wound on his finger, indicating a struggle.

While David had been using a walking stick and coping with breathlessness, his family noted he was in his best health for some time before his death. On the morning of the incident, he had spent time with his daughter and great-granddaughter, painting a picture of relative normalcy.

Police initially accepted Mrs. Berman’s account. However, five days later, the post-mortem examination raised suspicions, leading to her arrest on suspicion of murder. Throughout her police interview and trial, she expressed shock and grief, frequently breaking down in tears and affirming her love for her husband.

Prosecutors highlighted the unusual behavior they observed in Mrs. Berman following David’s death, describing her demeanor as emotionless and matter-of-fact, which contrasted with typical grieving responses.

Facing the jury’s questions about her possible involvement, Mrs. Berman repeatedly denied causing harm intentionally. Yet, the jury found the prosecution’s evidence compelling enough to convict her.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Sazeeda Ismail stated, “Daryl Berman stabbed her husband of 27 years in the chest and intentionally caused his death. She lied to paramedics, police, and family members when she claimed the injury was accidental. The jury saw through her lies and convicted her of murder.”

Mrs. Berman will be sentenced on July 3. This tragic case highlights the complexities surrounding dementia, domestic relationships, and justice.
