A dentist has warned that your toothbrush can carry bacteria long after use—often far more than a toilet seat. Surprisingly, toilet seats, made from smooth, non-porous materials like plastic or ceramic, and kept relatively dry, create an unfriendly environment for germs. On average, a toilet seat harbors about 50 bacteria per square inch.
Research from institutions such as Manchester University reveals that a used toothbrush may contain over 10 million bacteria and fungi. Dr. Milad Shadrooh, known as ‘The Singing Dentist,’ explains: “Most people rinse their toothbrush and assume it’s clean, but bacteria can linger on brush heads long after use, especially in damp bathroom environments.”
Your mouth is home to hundreds of billions of bacteria. Brushing removes plaque, food debris, saliva, and blood, but many microbes remain trapped between the tight clusters of bristles. Leaving a wet toothbrush in a humid bathroom creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply rapidly.

Ollie Brittan, co-founder of oral-care brand Whites Beaconsfield, adds, “Most people have no idea how contaminated their toothbrush can become."
Another factor contributing to toothbrush contamination is the “toilet plume”—a microscopic aerosol mist released when flushing a toilet with the lid open. These tiny droplets can travel up to six feet and settle on bathroom surfaces, including your toothbrush if it’s left nearby.
To combat this, Whites Beaconsfield introduced a UV Toothbrush Steriliser that uses hospital-grade UV-C technology to improve bathroom hygiene. Toothbrush bacteria can include harmful strains such as E. coli, Streptococcus mutans, and Staphylococcus aureus.
This steriliser kills 99.9% of bacteria in just three minutes while also drying toothbrushes. Brittan explained, “Upon discovering the levels of bacteria on toothbrushes, including airborne particles from toilet flushing, we saw an opportunity to create a genuinely useful product for consumers."
