Why I Still Shop at Sainsbury’s But Now Buy Salmon from Aldi

I’m a regular at my local Sainsbury’s, visiting almost daily for groceries. However, recently I’ve found myself making more trips to Aldi—specifically for one item that offers much better value: salmon.

While I generally prefer Sainsbury’s for its fresh produce, which I believe stays fresher longer and tastes better, the price difference for salmon between the two stores has been hard to ignore. Salmon is a staple in my kitchen. I enjoy it several times a week, pairing it with rice, noodles, or vegetables. This oily fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and antioxidants, benefits that support heart health, brain function, and skin elasticity.

That said, salmon prices at Sainsbury’s have become steep. Even with discounts and Nectar card offers, some packs of two fillets cost close to £5 or even £6.50, far above what I’m willing to pay regularly. Although Sainsbury’s offers a pack of two boneless salmon fillets for £3.59—a price comparable to Aldi’s—I have often found bones in these fillets, which is frustrating.

By contrast, Aldi’s Fishmonger Boneless Salmon Fillets, also sold in a two-pack, offer excellent quality and fewer bones, making them my preferred choice now.

Aldi has also won me over with its bakery range. I used to buy pastries like croissants and pain au chocolat at Sainsbury’s, but they often felt stale or dry unless purchased very early. Aldi’s bakery items, despite their lower price, have impressed me with their freshness and flavor, prompting me to switch entirely for these treats.

Shopping around for individual items can significantly reduce your grocery bills. If frequent visits to multiple supermarkets aren’t feasible, loyalty programs such as Nectar at Sainsbury’s and Clubcard at Tesco offer valuable discounts and rewards, helping shoppers save money.
