“Why don’t you shoot?” Forest Green Rovers boss Robbie Savage frustrated after Wealdstone draw

Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage expressed his frustration following a 1-1 draw against Wealdstone at Grosvenor Vale, lamenting missed opportunities despite his team’s dominance.

Coventry City loanee Isaac Moore opened the scoring with a precise, glancing header in the first half, while Micah Obiero equalised for Wealdstone midway through the second period after capitalising on a defensive scramble.

“It’s just so frustrating because draws aren’t good enough in this league,” Savage said. “We had 30 shots but only scored once, while they had three and scored one.”

Savage highlighted his team’s inability to convert chances, stressing the importance of taking shots when opportunities arise. “The amount of time players get through on goal and don’t shoot is baffling. We work on this in training; when you’re in a position to shoot, you should shoot.”

The Rovers controlled much of the match, with right-back Tom Knowles and winger Kyle McAllister frequently creating chances down the right flank. Yet the visitors struggled to capitalize, much to Savage’s chagrin.

“We should be winning these games given the chances we create. Our team was outstanding for 88 minutes, but defensive mistakes cost us.”

Wealdstone’s equaliser came from a defensive lapse, allowing Obiero to tap in at the back post. Savage was critical of the defensive errors leading up to the goal, adding, “I’m more frustrated today than I have been all season because we played so well.”

The closing stages saw American youth international Aidan Dausch nearly secure a late winner, only to be denied by a remarkable save from Wealdstone’s goalkeeper Dante Baptiste, who used his head and chest to deny the effort.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain and cold winds, Savage felt his team adapted well and maintained their focus. He also praised individual performances, particularly that of Temi Babalola, applauding his physicality and contribution in the hold-up play.

With this draw, Forest Green Rovers extended their unbeaten league run to five matches since a loss at Carlisle over a month ago. Savage remains hopeful but adamant that his team must start turning dominance into wins.
