The village of Whelford became the focus of national attention recently following the evacuation of residents after three suspicious vans were spotted heading towards RAF Fairford on Sunday, September 27. This incident led to the arrest of five men on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences. They were released on police bail the following day, September 28, and once the 400-metre safety cordon was lifted, the 85 evacuated households were allowed to return.
Amid the turmoil, a local resident has addressed a dispute that emerged following the leak of messages and images from a private WhatsApp group. Helen Webb Aviation, a Whelford resident, shared a video on social media recounting the events. She explained that an early morning observation of the vans parked across the road and blocking a driveway prompted a villager to post photos and a message querying the unusual activity within the village WhatsApp group.
This initial alert was followed by further commentary, photos, and videos from other villagers as the situation developed. However, Helen highlighted her concern about a subsequent breach of privacy, revealing that someone had shared the images and a transcript from the private group with the media without permission.

Helen stated, “One of our community, our neighbours, used other people’s images and words without their permission. I have asked several times in the group for them to own up, but of course they haven’t.”
She added that although some residents are now facing media attention, she is prepared to handle enquiries thanks to media training from her time with the RAF. Helen also expressed sympathy for older villagers who may not realise the extent to which the media will pursue a story.
Despite recent events, Helen expressed relief at being back home and reflected on the unusual nature of the current times.
The incident has brought significant disruption to the small community, highlighting the challenges posed by modern communication and media presence during sensitive situations.
