Westonbirt, the renowned Gloucestershire attraction famous for its vivid autumn colours, has announced new experiences for the 2026 season.
From Monday 7 September, visitors can explore a brand-new immersive experience called the ‘Magic of Maples’ trail. Winding through the national arboretum, this trail invites people of all ages to discover Westonbirt’s impressive collection of Japanese maples, celebrated for their vibrant and varied hues.
A spokesperson for Forestry England explained, “The Japanese maple collections, with their striking colours, are at the heart of Westonbirt’s autumn appeal. The ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ trail, located in Silk Wood, incorporates nine Japanese concepts that provide a unique way to appreciate the vivid colours of the trees. Visitors are encouraged to engage all their senses and find personal moments of joy-whether it’s a tree that captivates them or a peaceful spot to soak in the autumn splendour.”

To enhance the experience, Westonbirt is hosting a series of free family-friendly events throughout September and October. One highlight is the ‘Meet the Machines’ family day on Saturday 19 September from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Designed for children aged three and above, this event offers a unique opportunity to interact with some of the vehicles used in caring for the arboretum’s trees and landscape. Kids can sit in one of the site’s large tractors, a mower, or an all-terrain vehicle, while toddlers can enjoy playing with toy vehicles on the arboretum’s play map.
With peak autumn colour season running from 25 September to 15 November, prebooking is recommended. Each day during this period, there will be three complimentary guided walks available, providing insight into the arboretum’s rich history.
Additional interactive attractions include the Room on the Broom trail, launched earlier in the year. The trail is filled with themed activities, forest facts, and hands-on fun. Trail packs are available for £4 from the Welcome Building or shop, helping visitors accompany the Witch as she searches for her lost hat, bow, wand, and ingredients needed to complete her spell.
The well-loved Gruffalo trail also continues to be a favourite, featuring sculptures that bring the characters from the popular book to life. Most of these sculptures are found in the dog-free area of the Old Arboretum, making it an ideal spot for families.
With its vibrant trails, family events, and stunning scenery, Westonbirt promises an engaging and colourful experience for all visitors this autumn.
