‘We’re a miles better team now, but we need to do better in key moments’ - Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill after Oldham Athletic defeat

Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill reflected on his team’s performance following their 2-1 defeat to Oldham Athletic. He acknowledged that while the team has improved significantly, there are crucial moments in matches where they still need to raise their game.

“We started the game slowly and finished it strongly,” Cotterill said. “Our preparation was solid, and the match unfolded pretty much as we expected. However, in certain key moments, we didn’t perform well enough, and that cost us goals. Once that happens, it’s a tough mountain to climb.”

Cotterill was confident his side deserved at least a point from the game. “We deserved something from the match. We are a miles better team now, but we have to do better in some of those pivotal moments.”

A sloppy corner just before half-time led to Oldham’s crucial opening goal. Cotterill pointed out that such moments are familiar challenges the team has been working on but failed to execute effectively this time.

Despite the loss, Cheltenham created several scoring opportunities, especially in the second half where they could have scored multiple goals, only thwarted by Oldham’s goalkeeper making several outstanding saves.

Performance-wise, Cotterill praised Jake Bickerstaff’s versatility across the forward positions and noted George Miller’s impressive contribution despite carrying a calf injury. “George was a real shining light, holding his own against tough defenders and creating threats throughout the first half.”

Arkell Jude-Boyd showed mixed form on the right wing against a difficult opponent, but Cotterill emphasized the importance of collective effort during high-pressure games where every player must contribute decisively.

Regarding squad management, Cotterill indicated potential player movements as the club looks to strengthen. With limited loan options and some injured players, the focus remains on strategic signings rather than transfer fees.

On injured players like Ryan Broom, progress is slow but steady, and the manager remains cautiously optimistic. Cotterill also spoke about the challenges of integrating players post-injury and the importance of managing their fitness carefully.

In summary, while the result was disappointing, Cotterill sees a “new team” emerging at Cheltenham Town. They have made significant progress but must continue to improve their execution in critical moments if they want to turn performances into consistent wins.
