‘We’ll Never Be on the Beach While I’m Here’ - Cheltenham Town Boss Steve Cotterill Reflects on Cambridge United Draw

In a resilient display against a strong Cambridge United side, Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill expressed pride in his team’s perseverance after securing a 1-1 draw. Despite a tough schedule with extensive travel and a challenging run of fixtures, Cotterill emphasized that his squad never gave up.

“We didn’t deserve to lose today,” Cotterill said. “Cambridge are a quality team, and we’ve seen that recently. But the lads have been through a lot lately, with many away games, and they’ve done exceptionally well to keep the club in a good position. It’s tough to get results late in the season, especially against top teams pushing for wins. Today, we showed belief after a solid first half, aside from one sloppy moment when they scored.”

The match itself had few clear chances, though Cheltenham edged possession in the second half against one of the league’s best teams. Cotterill brushed off questions about a delayed referee decision and instead focused on his players’ effort. “The last few weeks have been taxing, but the players kept going and the supporters appreciate that. This draw against a probable promotion contender is a good result.”

Injury concerns surfaced with midfielder Ben Stevenson, who was substituted after struggling with an adductor strain. Cotterill acknowledged the impact but praised Stevenson’s commitment: “Ben’s been crucial since I returned here. He works quietly and efficiently—an important leader and character in the dressing room.”

Turning to tactical adjustments, Cotterill explained his use of a 4-4-2 formation late in the game, helping Mo Faal come on and challenge in the air, and allowing George Miller to put pressure on Cambridge’s goalkeeper leading to Cheltenham’s equalizer. “Sometimes you need two strikers working together—that’s what made the difference today.”

Looking ahead, Cotterill made it clear there would be no easing up before the season’s end. “We’re three weeks from finishing, and the idea of ‘being on the beach’ is not happening while I’m here. Every game matters and we’re determined to finish strongly. It’s about maintaining urgency, focus, and pride in the style of football we play.”

Despite only gaining a point, Cotterill remains confident in his team’s direction and the spirit they’ve shown throughout the campaign. “We wanted three points, but we earned this one. Staying up is the goal, but doing it playing good football—that’s what I want. I’m hard to please, but I’m proud of how far we’ve come.”
