A cherished charity shop in Winchcombe, operated by Longfield Community Hospice, is set to close its doors permanently on 1 September 2024 due to financial challenges.
The North Street outlet was opened in February 2022 by the Stroud-based hospice to support its vital care services for individuals and families affected by life-limiting illnesses. However, after careful evaluation, the charity has concluded that continuing to run this particular shop is no longer financially sustainable.
Longfield Community Hospice shared the announcement on Facebook, expressing gratitude to donors, supporters, customers, staff and volunteers who contributed to the shop’s success over the years. They stated that the decision to close was difficult but necessary to ensure the long-term viability of the hospice’s operations.
“This has not been an easy decision, but it has been made with the long-term sustainability of Longfield in mind,” said Debbie Linton, head of retail at Longfield. “The shop is no longer financially viable, and continuing to operate it would put additional strain on our resources.”
Ms Linton emphasised that the closure does not reflect on the commitment and hard work of the Winchcombe shop team, recognising the employees’ and volunteers’ efforts in creating a welcoming community space.
The charity reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to providing specialist hospice care for local people, noting that every purchase, donation and hour volunteered at the shop helped to fund these essential services.
The decision has been met with sadness from local customers, who praised the shop and its staff for their dedication and the positive impact the shop had within the community.
Longfield is currently consulting with the affected staff and exploring opportunities to support them through the transition, including alternative employment options. The charity is also investigating ways to continue engaging and utilising its valued volunteers.
Supporters wishing to assist Longfield are encouraged to visit one of the charity’s 21 other shops across Gloucestershire. These include three shops in Cheltenham and one in Bishop’s Cleeve, all within approximately 10 miles of Winchcombe.
The hospice appreciates the continued generosity of its customers and volunteers as it strives to maintain its vital care work across the region.
