Thousands of holidaymakers planning trips abroad this summer while using popular weight loss treatments Wegovy and Mounjaro have been warned about the risks of improper handling that could render these medications ineffective or even unsafe. With millions relying on these injections for weight management, strict adherence to storage and transportation guidelines is essential to maintain their safety and efficacy.
Research from ZAVA estimates that around 337,000 people will travel while using these medications during the summer. However, incorrect storage—especially exposure to extreme temperatures—can compromise the injections. ZAVA’s experts emphasize three key tips for travelling with Wegovy and Mounjaro, along with critical considerations before departure.
First, when arranging travel insurance, it is crucial to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, including the use of weight loss drugs. Failure to declare these treatments can invalidate your insurance policy, leaving you without coverage in the event of medical complications, which may result in costly expenses.

Second, check the import regulations of your destination to ensure these medications are permitted and confirm the allowable quantities for personal use. Carry proof of prescription in either paper or digital form, and keep the medication in its original packaging to avoid issues at customs.
Insurance providers such as Admiral generally do not cover GLP-1 injections if purchased unofficially or if their use is undeclared or not medically supervised. It is advisable to contact your insurer directly to verify that all relevant information is correctly logged.
Never pack Wegovy or Mounjaro in checked luggage due to extreme and fluctuating temperatures in baggage holds. Freezing and thawing cycles can damage the medication’s integrity, potentially making it unsafe. Instead, always keep your injections in your hand luggage.
Airport security generally allows essential liquid medications even if they exceed 100ml. To ease the screening process, keep medicines separate in your bag, inform security officers, and present supporting documentation where possible. When in doubt, consult your airline ahead of time about their rules on carrying medication.
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro must be stored as per manufacturer guidelines. They should be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C or may be stored at room temperature up to 30°C for no more than 28 to 30 days. Pens exposed to temperatures above 30°C or left unrefrigerated beyond the recommended time must be discarded, as they can become unsafe.
Patients are encouraged to contact their accommodation in advance to confirm access to a refrigerator and ensure it maintains suitable temperatures, as this can vary between facilities.
Since these injections are administered weekly, most users will complete pens within the safe unrefrigerated period, unless travel is extended or doses are missed. Following these precautions ensures the medication remains safe and effective throughout your trip.
