In 2007, Luís Ribeiro and Cristina Simões of Barcelos, Portugal, were living a humble life marked by a cherished weekly ritual: pooling their money at a local café to buy a EuroMillions ticket. Their routine hope of hitting the jackpot became a life-changing reality on January 19, when their numbers won them a staggering €15 million (£12.4 million).
What should have been a joyous new chapter quickly took a dark twist. The couple’s winnings were not solely in their names; they were also tied to Cristina’s parents’ bank accounts, which complicated access to their prize. Initially full of dreams for financial stability, holidays, investments, and even marriage, tensions soon arose. Luis wanted access to his share to support his family, but Cristina’s parents blocked withdrawals, insisting financial decisions be postponed until after the couple wed.
