Gloucester City endured a frustrating 1-0 defeat at Berkhamsted on Saturday, leaving manager Daf Williams disappointed with his team’s performance. With Walton & Hersham hosting Farnham Town—a perfect chance for City to close the gap on their rivals—hopes were high.
The first half saw Gloucester City retain possession but struggle to create meaningful chances, setting the stage for a pivotal second half. However, the game turned against them when Morgan Lewis was shown a second yellow card for handball in the 59th minute, marking Gloucester’s ninth red card of the season. This forced a tactical reshuffle, with loanee MacKenzie Stretton stepping into a makeshift full-back role—a position he’s familiar with from his youth career.
Just ten minutes later, Berkhamsted broke the deadlock through a stunning volley from JJ Lacey. Despite pressing hard for an equalizer, Gloucester City couldn’t overturn the deficit. With Farnham also losing, City missed a prime opportunity to gain ground in the standings.

Reflecting on the match, Williams was candid about his team’s shortcomings. “We weren’t good enough today,” he stated. “You can talk about the referee all you want, but ultimately, it comes down to our performance. On reflection, a draw might have been fair, but we didn’t play well enough to earn it.”
Williams also criticized the refereeing decisions, particularly the two yellow cards shown to Lewis, calling the second a “shambolic” call, but stressed that the team couldn’t rely on such factors.
Looking ahead, Gloucester City host Uxbridge next weekend. Williams remains hopeful the team can control their destiny. “Hopefully, the result won’t hinge on poor decisions. We’ll regroup, reset, and with the backing of our fantastic supporters, we’ll give everything to get the result.”
