“We Weren’t Good Enough Today” – Gloucester City Manager Daf Williams After Berkhamsted Defeat

Gloucester City manager Daf Williams expressed his disappointment following his team’s narrow 1-0 loss to Berkhamsted on Saturday afternoon. With a key fixture between Walton & Hersham and Farnham Town underway, it was an ideal opportunity for City to capitalize on their rivals' potential slip-ups and gain valuable points.

The first half was subdued, with Gloucester maintaining possession but failing to create any clear goal-scoring chances. Both sides remained cautious, setting the stage for a crucial second half that could influence the course of the season.

Unfortunately for City, the game took a turn early in the second half when Morgan Lewis was shown his second yellow card for handball in the 59th minute, reducing Gloucester to ten men. This marked the ninth red card of the season for City, a statistic that continues to haunt the team.

Ten minutes later, Berkhamsted broke the deadlock when JJ Lacey fired a volley into the net, giving the home side a 1-0 lead. Despite relentless efforts from the Tigers over the final 20 minutes, Gloucester couldn’t find an equalizer. With Farnham Town also losing their match, City missed the chance to close the gap on their competitors.

Williams was candid in his post-match analysis: “I don’t think we were at it today. People might blame the referee or say the sending-off was harsh, but we simply weren’t good enough. Reflecting on the game as a whole, perhaps a draw would have been fair, but it wasn’t our day.”

He criticized some of the referee’s decisions, notably the sequence leading to the second yellow card: “The first yellow was for simulation, which I can accept, but then the referee let the opposition get away with similar fouls. The second booking was for handball when the ball was out of play and everyone had stopped—it was absolutely shambolic. But at the end of the day, you can’t blame the officials; we just didn’t perform well.”

The red card forced Williams into tactical adjustments, introducing loanee MacKenzie Stretton as a makeshift full-back. “He has a lot of experience playing left-back in his youth career, so we were comfortable deploying him there. Going down to ten men, we needed to manage our shape carefully, and I think MacKenzie did a solid job in both of his substitute appearances so far.”

Looking ahead, City will host Uxbridge in their next fixture. Williams remains hopeful his team can control their destiny moving forward: “Hopefully, the outcome won’t be decided by another poor decision. We are aware that the home game last season was affected by a referee’s call. Let’s hope any future results are down to our own efforts. We’ll regroup and reset during the week and give everything for our fantastic supporters at home to get a positive result.”
