Warwickshire kept their hopes alive in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a commanding six-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at Rugby School, effectively ending Gloucestershire’s tournament ambitions.
Chasing a target of 272, Warwickshire captain Rob Yates was the standout performer, scoring a commanding 132 off 123 balls – his highest List A score to date. His efforts, combined with an unbeaten 66 from Vaansh Jani, contributed to a decisive third-wicket partnership of 147 runs in just 20 overs. Warwickshire comfortably secured the win with 48 balls remaining.
Gloucestershire’s total was largely built on Oliver Price’s fluent innings of 122 runs from 124 balls, marking his own List A best. However, the Gloucestershire bowling attack struggled to contain the opposition, with Ethan Bamber conceding only 35 runs in his full quota of ten overs. Jordan Thompson and Jake Lintott also made crucial breakthroughs with three wickets each.

Despite setting a challenging score, Gloucestershire’s defeat marked their fourth loss in five games, ending their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the competition.
Gloucestershire began the innings steadily but were constrained early on by disciplined bowling from Warwickshire’s Olly Hannon-Dalby and Bamber. Hannon-Dalby’s tight six-over spell included three maidens and the early dismissal of James Bracey. Price and Cameron Bancroft then put on a cautious 90-run partnership before Bancroft was caught off Lintott’s bowling.
Joe Eckland provided a late surge with three sixes during his 42-run innings from 33 balls, but the momentum shifted as Thompson took wickets in successive deliveries, removing Eckland and Jack Taylor. A brilliant catch by Yates dismissed Graeme van Buuren, but Price continued undeterred to reach his century before being caught at mid-off.
In response, Warwickshire lost Kai Smith early to a well-pitched delivery from Will Williams but steadily progressed. Yates and Zen Malik added 77 runs together before Malik was caught. From there, Yates and Jani accelerated the scoring, combining attractive strokeplay and powerful hitting to secure a comprehensive victory.
The win was a fitting opener for the 2026 Rugby Cricket Festival, enjoyed by a large and appreciative crowd, and it bolsters Warwickshire’s prospects of advancing in the tournament.
