Police are warning residents in Cheltenham and Bishop’s Cleeve to be vigilant following a recent scam in which a woman was tricked into handing over £3,000 to a fake courier. The scammers posed as Detective Inspector Collins and Superintendent Rowland, using phone numbers starting with 01242 to contact their victims.
The victim was convinced by the fraudsters' authoritative claims and instructed to give the money to a courier who was reportedly collecting it for an ongoing investigation. Unfortunately, the courier was part of the scam, and the woman lost a significant amount of money.
Officers urge the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to be police officers, especially if they request money or personal details. Genuine police officers will never ask for payments or financial information over the phone.
