Adenomyosis is a little-known but painful condition affecting approximately one in 10 women, yet it often goes undiagnosed and untreated. Dr. Suraj Kukadia, known as Dr. Sooj, recently highlighted the warning signs of this “horrible” and overlooked disease in a popular TikTok video watched by over 250,000 followers.
Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue similar to the lining of the womb (endometrium) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. While some women may not experience symptoms, many suffer from severe pelvic pain, heavy and painful periods, unexpected bleeding, bloating, and pain during sexual intercourse.
Dr. Sooj emphasized the lack of awareness around adenomyosis, explaining, “No one talks about adenomyosis, so let’s talk about it.” He also noted its strong connection to endometriosis, a related condition where similar tissue grows outside the womb and affects about 10% of women. Both conditions can take years to diagnose, creating prolonged suffering for those affected.

Key symptoms to watch for include chronic pelvic pain, intense menstrual cramps, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain during sex, and abdominal bloating. The NHS advises those experiencing severe or worsening pelvic or period pain, especially if painkillers aren’t effective, to seek medical advice promptly.
Diagnosis may involve a physical internal examination and imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI scans. Although the exact cause of adenomyosis remains unknown, risk factors include age over 30 and having given birth. Treatment options range from hormonal therapies to non-hormonal methods, but currently, the only definitive cure is a hysterectomy.
Dr. Sooj expressed concern over the lack of knowledge and research surrounding adenomyosis, underscoring the urgent need to raise awareness and improve care for women living with this painful condition.
