Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Warning Sign That Manifests in the Feet

Vitamin B12 deficiency can present several warning signs, one of which often appears in the feet. This essential vitamin plays a critical role in producing red blood cells that transport oxygen throughout the body, directly impacting wound healing and overall health.

Beyond wound recovery, vitamin B12 supports eye health, protein absorption, DNA formation, and a strong immune system. According to experts from the University of Nottingham, a lack of vitamin B12 can impair wound healing, especially in the feet.

The vitamin is primarily obtained from foods like eggs, beef, chicken, and cheese, and is absorbed through the digestive system with the help of a stomach-produced protein called intrinsic factor (IF). Without sufficient IF, vitamin B12 cannot be properly absorbed and is lost through digestion.

Certain immune system disorders may attack stomach cells responsible for producing intrinsic factor, leading to a deficiency. This can cause neurological symptoms such as tingling sensations or numbness in the feet.

If you experience tingling or other unusual sensations in your feet, it’s important to consult your GP. Treatment may involve high-dose vitamin B12 supplements, and in severe cases, weekly vitamin B12 injections may be necessary. Addressing a deficiency promptly is crucial to prevent serious complications, including neurological damage and blood disorders.

Additional symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency can include fatigue, weakness, memory problems, difficulty walking, anemia, cognitive issues, and a swollen or inflamed tongue. Since symptoms often develop gradually, timely diagnosis and treatment are essential.
