Vitamin B12 plays an essential role in many bodily functions, including the production of red blood cells, DNA formation, immune support, and nerve health. When deficient, one of the early warning signs can manifest as symptoms in the feet.
According to experts at the University of Nottingham, a lack of vitamin B12 can impair wound healing and cause neurological issues, often first noticeable in the feet. This is because vitamin B12 helps maintain nerve function and supports oxygen transport through red blood cells to tissues throughout the body, including the feet.
Vitamin B12 is primarily obtained through diet, found in foods like eggs, beef, chicken, and cheese. Normally, a stomach-produced protein called intrinsic factor (IF) binds to vitamin B12, allowing it to be absorbed in the intestines. However, if the immune system attacks the stomach cells producing IF, vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed efficiently, leading to deficiency.

One common symptom of deficiency is tingling or numbness in the feet, which should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional. Doctors may recommend high-dose vitamin B12 supplements or, in more severe cases, weekly B12 injections to restore adequate levels.
Ignoring vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to serious neurological complications, blood disorders such as anemia, fatigue, weakness, cognitive issues, difficulty walking, memory loss, and inflammation of the tongue. Since symptoms often develop gradually, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing long-term damage.
