A new bungalow in a village near Gloucester has been granted permission for construction, bringing hope to a family in need. Abigail Smith and Gary McCreery have been given the go-ahead to build the new home on land next to Rosemary Cottage in Hartpury.
Despite the site being located outside the village’s boundary and in open countryside, Forest of Dean District Council recommended approving the proposals. The bungalow, designed with an open plan kitchen/dining room, snug, two bedrooms, and a bathroom, was deemed to offer substantial benefits that outweighed the negatives.
The layout has been specifically tailored to accommodate the living requirements of Mr. McCreery, who is battling progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). This chronic condition triggers the body’s immune cells to attack the brain and spinal cord, resulting in symptoms such as muscle stiffness and difficulties with mobility and speech.

The design aims to maximize accessibility for wheelchair use, featuring wide hallways, open-plan spaces, and provision for future needs such as a ceiling hoist. Speaking at the development management committee, Ms. Smith emphasized the personal significance of the plans, stating, “My partner Gary and I are applying to build a modest single storey home on a plot immediately adjacent to my father and sister.”
She appealed to the councillors to recognize the genuine need behind the application, emphasizing the importance of living close to family support. The requested home is intended to enable Gary to live with dignity and actively participate in family life as a father, while also providing a nurturing environment for their young son.
Councillor Philip Burford stressed the importance of considering the human aspect in such cases, urging fellow council members to look beyond strict regulations and rules. Highlighting the family’s strong ties to the village, he emphasized the need to support individuals who have contributed to their community.
Following passionate advocacy from councillors and committee members, the proposal received unanimous approval, offering a beacon of hope for the family’s future.
