US Air Force Investigates Accidental Fire at RAF Fairford Amidst Recent Protests

An accidental fire broke out early Sunday morning at RAF Fairford, a Gloucestershire airbase used by the US Air Force, triggering an urgent investigation. Around 1 a.m., flames engulfed a single-storey industrial storage building, prompting multiple fire crews to respond swiftly. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue confirmed the fire was accidental and reported no casualties.

RAF Fairford has been playing a significant role since March when the UK government authorized its use for defensive operations amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. This involvement has drawn public attention and opposition, culminating in a peaceful anti-war protest held on Saturday. Approximately 200 demonstrators marched along the runway, carrying signs demanding the removal of US forces from British bases and an end to US military actions.

The airbase is strategically important as one of only two European bases capable of accommodating all three types of America’s long-range bombers. The US Air Force issued a statement reassuring the public that no injuries occurred, the fire is contained, and there is no current threat to personnel or the local community. They expressed gratitude for local support and emphasized that safety remains their highest priority.
