Urgent Repair Plans Approved for A40’s Listed Spring Bridge to Avoid Traffic Chaos

Plans to repair the A40’s Spring Bridge in Cheltenham have been approved, with urgent calls to carry out the work during school holidays to prevent widescale traffic disruption. The Grade II-listed bridge on London Road in Charlton Kings suffered a collapse of its north headwall and wings in May last year, resulting in the closure of the Oxford-bound lane and the implementation of two-way temporary traffic lights.

Gloucestershire County Council plans to remove the remaining unstable masonry, which has degraded due to water ingress. The repair scheme includes extensive drainage improvements aimed at preventing flooding that contributed to the bridge’s structural failure.

According to the council, the restoration will address all inherent defects while reinstating the bridge’s historic character and appearance. To complete the reconstruction, a full closure of the A40 will be required for an extended period. A diversion route will be arranged to manage traffic during this time.

Concerns raised during the planning committee meeting on July 17 highlighted issues with drain blockages caused by debris and leaves from overhanging trees near the River Chelt. Head of Planning Chris Gomm confirmed upgraded drainage services would be installed with the repairs, reducing the likelihood of future blockages.

Councillor Glenn Andrews urged scheduling the works within school holidays to mitigate the anticipated “absolute nightmare” of traffic on the A40. While acknowledging the importance of timing, Mr Gomm explained that exact scheduling falls outside the planning application’s scope and will be determined by the County Council to minimize disruption.

Other councillors expressed unanimous support for the repair plans, emphasizing the necessity of restoring the bridge promptly to prevent ongoing traffic difficulties and preserve safety.
