Undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes: Recognizing the Signs

In the UK, over four million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, while an additional 1.3 million likely have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, reports Diabetes UK. While there is no cure for diabetes, some individuals with type 2 may achieve remission by significantly reducing weight.

Diabetes remission involves returning blood sugar levels to a “normal” range; however, it is heavily reliant on weight maintenance, as regaining lost weight can retrigger diabetes. Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and stroke, according to NHS guidance. Contributing factors include age, ethnicity, family history, weight, inactivity, and high blood pressure.

It’s important to note that type 2 diabetes can develop without symptoms, though some individuals may notice signs, including eye-related issues. Blurry vision is highlighted by the NHS and Diabetes UK as a symptom of type 2 diabetes. Other potential signs include excessive thirst, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination (especially at night), slow wound healing, and genital itching. Seeking medical advice is recommended if there are suspicions of type 2 diabetes.
