Uncertainty over future of Cheltenham’s Art Deco landmark as it returns to market

The Daffodil, a distinctive former cinema and award-winning restaurant located in Cheltenham, is once again up for sale years after it closed its doors.

Originally opened in 1922 as an Art Deco gem, The Daffodil ceased operations in 2022 after enduring difficulties following the pandemic. While it briefly reopened for private events, it closed again in 2023. Current plans approved through the local planning authority envisage transforming the building into residential accommodation.

The property was first listed for sale in 2024 and has now been re-advertised by ASH Chartered Surveyors. The firm highlights the building’s prominent location on Suffolk Parade, situated in one of Cheltenham’s most desirable and characterful districts.

With an asking price of £1.6 million, prospective buyers are informed of the building’s historic and architectural features, including a barrel-vaulted foyer with an arched ceiling, original Art Deco elements such as pendant lights, porthole mirrors, stained glass panels, a twin curved staircase from the foyer, and a mezzanine gallery level.

The property boasts a principal space suitable for use as a restaurant, bar, or events venue across both ground and gallery floors. Additional back-of-house areas include preparation and ancillary spaces on the ground and basement levels, featuring a commercial kitchen equipped with stainless steel preparation surfaces, cooking ranges, overhead extraction canopies, and a separate wash-up area.

Further accommodation includes storage rooms and cold stores at basement level, as well as administrative offices and customer and staff WC facilities.

The total internal area covers approximately 650.3 square metres. Though the property’s planning permission currently supports residential use, the listing also references an alternative, unsubmitted proposal suggesting redevelopment into two town houses, three mews houses with communal gardens, and two coach houses at the rear.

Additionally, ASH is marketing a neighbouring two-storey building, once part of The Daffodil and formerly functioning as a deli, separately for £200,000. This self-contained property benefits from residential consent and may be considered for various uses subject to planning approval.
