UK’s Largest Wildlife Bridge to Open in Gloucestershire as Part of £460 Million Missing Link Project

Construction is underway on the Gloucestershire Way bridge, set to become the UK’s largest wildlife crossing and a centerpiece of the A417 Missing Link project. This ambitious National Highways initiative aims to improve road infrastructure while preserving the Cotswolds' rich natural environment and biodiversity.

Costing an estimated £460 million, the wildlife bridge will stretch 37 metres over the new dual carriageway connecting Gloucester and Cirencester. Its design includes a 27-metre grassland strip and a hedgerow corridor, enabling safe passage for a variety of species. Beyond serving animals, the bridge will also provide a crossing for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.

Flanking hedgerows will facilitate bat and barn owl movement, while integrated grasslands and trees create a safe route for deer, badgers, and reptiles. Gavin Jones, Kier’s project director, emphasized the bridge’s dual role: “It links habitats and landscapes across the road, prioritizing ecology but also providing a footpath for people. We’re on budget, ahead of schedule, and proud of our safety record.”

Nicola Bell, executive director of major projects at National Highways, highlighted the collaboration with Natural England: “Our work extends beyond roads to deliver better outcomes for both people and nature.” Marian Spain, Chief Executive of Natural England, added, “The A417 project exemplifies how early, open communication between agencies fosters sustainable development that benefits people and wildlife alike.”

While the Gloucestershire Way will be the UK’s largest, the world’s biggest wildlife crossing is located in Colorado, North America, setting an inspiring example for future projects worldwide.
