Snow is expected to make its first appearance in the UK by next weekend, primarily affecting northern regions, while the South West remains snow-free for now.
Although the season’s first official snow has yet to fall, meteorologists predict a light dusting beginning around 6pm on Friday, November 14, especially in northern Scotland near Inverness. This snowfall could last three to four days if conditions hold.
After a record mild October and early November, the Met Office forecasts a significant temperature drop in the coming week, with an increased likelihood of overnight frost from mid-November. Temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing from next Friday, with Glasgow and Aberdeen potentially hitting as low as -1°C overnight. Meanwhile, southern England will remain relatively mild, around 6°C by Monday morning.

British Weather Services' senior meteorologist Jim Dale explained, “Snow is likely to arrive by this time next week in the north. While it’s still early, we could see snow persist for several days, initially covering the Scottish mountains but potentially reaching northern England and Northern Ireland.” He advises closely monitoring severe weather warnings, which will be updated on Sunday to provide the latest details.
Alongside the snow forecast, the Met Office predicts frost and overnight fog becoming more common by mid-November. Hill snow is also a possibility later in the month as the UK transitions to cooler, drier conditions. Their long-range forecast highlights an unsettled start to the week with rain and occasional strong winds before drier, colder weather sets in.
Daily outlooks include:
- Today: Bright with sunny spells and light winds; a few afternoon showers possible. High of 14°C.
- Tonight: Clear spells with fog patches likely; rain approaching the west by dawn. Low of 8°C.
- Sunday: Cloudy and breezy with patchy rain becoming heavier at times; temperatures near average, around 14°C.
- Monday to Wednesday: Changeable with heavy showers, spells of rain, and blustery winds, but occasional sunny breaks and a milder feel.
As the UK prepares for the colder weather and the first snowflakes, residents in northern regions should be ready for the onset of winter’s chill.
