UK Weather Alert: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Expected as Temperatures Climb This Weekend

The Met Office has issued a weather warning highlighting the potential for showers and thunderstorms sweeping through the south and west of the UK this weekend. Today, high pressure dominates, delivering a calm day with abundant sunshine across much of the country.

Temperatures are set to climb above yesterday’s levels, thanks to reduced cloud cover. However, a notable weather shift is expected Saturday night as a low-pressure system moves northward from the continent.

Most areas will remain dry with clear skies during the day, but by early Sunday morning, cloud cover will thicken in the southwest. This brings an increased risk of showers and isolated thunderstorms spreading overnight and into Sunday morning.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris explained, “From Saturday night into Sunday, rain, showers, and isolated thunderstorms are likely to move northwards across southwest parts of the UK. This pattern will extend to western Great Britain and Northern Ireland by Sunday and Monday.”

Monday may see particularly intense thunderstorms, especially across Wales and southern England. Elsewhere, dry, fine, and increasingly warm weather is expected throughout this period.

If thunderstorms develop as predicted, heavy rainfall of 25-35mm per hour could cause localized surface water flooding. Additional hazards include hail, lightning, and strong, isolated wind gusts.

“Forecasting the exact location of thunderstorms at this range remains uncertain,” Harris advised. “Please stay updated with the Met Office forecast and any severe weather warnings issued throughout the weekend.”

Alongside showers, warm spells will return when sunshine breaks through clouds in the west and southwest, with temperatures expected to reach 26-27°C on Sunday and Monday. Tuesday looks bright for much of the UK, and stable, calm weather is forecast to continue through the middle of the week.

Weather at a glance:

  • Today: Dry and mostly sunny with patchy fair-weather clouds. Cooler start warming up in May sunshine. Max temperature: 20°C.

Stay vigilant and keep abreast of forecasts and warnings to navigate the weekend’s changing weather safely.
