The UK is preparing for its fifth heatwave of 2026, with temperatures predicted to rise significantly, reaching up to 36°C across 27 counties. This surge in heat comes with a series of health warnings issued to help the public manage the extreme weather conditions expected over the coming days.
According to the latest weather forecasts from WXCharts.com, a substantial heatwave will affect much of England from 13 August. The highest temperatures are anticipated to emerge from the South and South East, extending through the Midlands and into eastern England. In these areas, temperatures may soar to as high as 36°C, creating stifling conditions for residents and visitors alike.
Elsewhere in the UK, temperatures are expected to be more moderate. Scotland and Northern Ireland will generally experience milder weather, with temperatures remaining in the teens and low 20s. Similarly, parts of western Wales and northern England are likely to escape the most intense heat, providing some relief from the warmer conditions seen further south.

In response to the forecast, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat health alerts. These alerts cover the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London, remaining in effect from 9am on Saturday until 9pm on Tuesday. The warnings highlight the potential impact of high temperatures on public health, urging caution particularly for vulnerable groups.
Meteorological experts, including Deputy Chief Forecaster Mike Silverstone, anticipate that temperatures will steadily climb through the weekend and reach a peak in the middle of next week. A brief temperature dip is expected on Monday before high pressure settles to the east, ushering in a southerly flow and widespread heat across England and Wales.
Mr Silverstone explained, “The heatwave is likely to be fairly widespread across large parts of England and Wales, with particularly hot conditions developing. Temperatures could reach up to 34°C in central and southern England and southeast Wales by Wednesday. East Anglia and south-east England may see temperatures rise even higher by Thursday.”
He also noted that increasing humidity levels throughout the week could make the conditions feel more oppressive, especially overnight.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast from 12th to 21st August indicates a varied start to the period, with rain and showers expected in northern areas alongside breezy conditions. In contrast, southern regions are anticipated to remain mostly dry, sunny, and hot, with some areas experiencing very high temperatures. However, a cooler and fresher change is likely to arrive in southern parts by the following weekend.
