UK Faces Shortage of Ramipril 1.25mg Capsules Used for Blood Pressure Management

Pharmacies across the UK are grappling with supply shortages of ramipril 1.25mg capsules, a commonly prescribed medication for high blood pressure. Authorities have issued a serious shortage protocol restricting patients to a one-month supply to manage dwindling stock levels.

Ramipril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, helps lower blood pressure by widening blood vessels, easing the heart’s workload. With approximately three million prescriptions dispensed monthly in England alone, the shortage has raised concerns among healthcare providers and patients.

Olivier Picard, chairman of the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), expressed alarm at the scarcity and rising costs of ramipril. He emphasized the importance of government action to allow pharmacists to substitute alternative medications without requiring patients to revisit their GPs. Picard highlighted that ongoing supply challenges, exacerbated by global instability and insufficient pharmacy funding, threaten access to essential medicines.

Professor Ian Maidment of Aston University noted that while ramipril 1.25mg capsules are limited, other ACE inhibitors remain available. He urged patients to consult their pharmacy or GP for guidance and reassured that alternatives exist despite the complex management needs imposed by the shortage.

A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care acknowledged the limited supply and detailed ongoing efforts to support equitable distribution. Investments in domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing aim to bolster long-term supply resilience as the government works closely with suppliers to resolve the disruption.

This shortage underscores the fragility of medicine supply chains and the critical role of coordinated management to maintain patient care and medication availability during periods of disruption.
