Two Pedestrians Injured in Separate Collisions with Cyclists on Gloucester’s Cheltenham Road

Two pedestrians and two cyclists were injured in separate incidents on Cheltenham Road, Gloucester, after pedestrians stepped into marked cycle lanes. The collisions, occurring just minutes apart, have prompted warnings from local authorities about road safety.

The first accident took place on Wednesday, July 8, when a schoolchild suddenly walked into the path of a cyclist on the dedicated cycle lane. The cyclist sustained a cut elbow in the collision. While responders were addressing this incident, a second crash occurred nearby. A pedestrian, distracted by headphones and phone use, stepped into the green cycle lane and collided with an oncoming cyclist.

The Police and Crime Commissioner’s office has urged all road users to remain vigilant and considerate. Nick Evans, Chair of Gloucestershire’s Road Safety Partnership and Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, emphasized the importance of patience and awareness on the roads.

“It is tempting to be distracted or let impatience take over, but kindness and attention can prevent injuries and reduce tensions,” Evans said. “Respecting cycle lanes and hard shoulders is crucial for everyone’s safety. Avoiding distractions like mobile phones and allowing extra time can make all the difference.”

These incidents are part of a wider safety campaign in Gloucestershire during Operation Spotlight, a national initiative running through July to reduce fatal and serious road injuries. Since the start of 2024, the county has already seen 16 fatal collisions, nearly matching the total from last year.

Evans called for coordinated action: “This alarming increase in serious collisions demands a strong response from police, councils, and emergency services. Education and proactive policing are vital to tackling these risks and saving lives.”

Cllr Roger Whyborn, Cabinet Member for Road Safety at Gloucestershire County Council, echoed this sentiment: “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether driving, cycling, or walking, staying alert and considerate of others protects us all.”
