Tuffley Rovers Manager Neil Mustoe Reflects on Progress and Challenges Ahead

Tuffley Rovers are in the midst of a solid campaign in the Hellenic League Premier Division, boasting 10 wins and five draws from 28 matches. Currently eighth in the standings, they have played more games than most teams, highlighting their consistency and resilience.

Manager Neil Mustoe candidly admits the team isn’t quite where he hoped they’d be at this stage. “We’re about eight or nine points shy of where I’d like us to be. Even then, it wouldn’t be enough for a play-off spot, but considering our budget constraints compared to others, I’m genuinely pleased with our progress.”

Finishing above 11th place with over 50 points would mark four years of steady improvement — a milestone Mustoe values highly.

Goal-scoring has been a collective effort this season. Lead striker Karnell Chambers has netted 13 goals in 31 appearances, but importantly, nine other players have scored two or more goals each. “Spreading goals around the team has been vital. Nell has an impressive record with nearly 50 goals in 90 games, and sharing the scoring load takes the pressure off him. I’m confident he’ll reach 20 goals by season’s end,” Mustoe explains.

The team’s attacking form is evident, having scored 25 or 26 goals in their last 11 games. “Scoring isn’t a problem for us right now, which is a great position to be in.”

After a rare weekend off, Tuffley Rovers face Pershore Town this weekend at the Recruit 12 Community Stadium in Worcestershire. Mustoe reflects on the break: “While it was good to rest, I would have preferred it earlier during a sticky run when we struggled for results.” The team endured a tough spell between late September and mid-November, securing just one point.

Looking ahead to the match against Pershore Town, Mustoe notes the challenge. “They’ve been inconsistent this season. In our previous encounter, they turned the game around in the second half after we led at halftime. Their league position doesn’t fully reflect their capability, making them a formidable opponent.”

Kick-off is set for 3pm, and Mustoe’s side will be eager to build on recent positive momentum and continue their upward trajectory.
