Tuffley Rovers secured a significant 2-0 victory over their local rivals Longlevens at the newly renamed R B Walters Estate Agents Stadium, Glevum Park, ending a decade-long home winless streak against them in league play.
The spotlight shone on forward Connor Walters, who netted both goals for Tuffley. He opened the scoring just nine seconds into the second half, capitalising on a through ball that left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Walters then sealed the win during stoppage time, finishing a counter-attack with a composed finish similar to his first goal, as Longlevens pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Despite a goalless first half, both teams had opportunities to take the lead. The standout chance was for Longlevens’ Finlay Gwillim, whose one-on-one effort narrowly missed the target. However, Tuffley largely dominated possession and created more scoring opportunities throughout the first 45 minutes.

A notable moment just before half-time saw controversy when Longlevens’ goalkeeper Luke Merchant appeared to handle the ball outside his area, but the referee allowed play to continue, much to the visiting side’s disbelief.
Tuffley had strong attempts on goal, including a long-range strike from Jacob Eakers that struck the crossbar, followed by a close miss from Antonio Pirelli. Their persistence finally paid off immediately after the interval with Walters' quick goal.
The second half saw a more physical and scrappy contest, with Longlevens making multiple substitutions in an attempt to change the game. Both sides had further chances, including another opportunity for Gwillim, who was unable to convert.
Tempers flared with about fifteen minutes remaining following a robust two-footed challenge by Tuffley’s Callum McGuirk, sparking a brief melee among players and staff, though no dismissals were issued.
The stoppage-time goal confirmed Tuffley’s commanding performance and elevated them to third place in the Hellenic Premier Division. Meanwhile, Longlevens extended their winless run to six games, remaining with just two points from those matches.
Tuffley Rovers manager Neil Mustoe praised Walters, saying: “As you could see today, he can finish, but he’ll be going away from today thinking he could have had three or four. He’s done really well; sometimes you go through these spells, and he’s going through one right now, so hopefully, long may it continue.”
Reflecting on the squad’s performance, Mustoe added: “It’s going to be a squad thing, as much as the starters will want to play every week. We were down on our knees on Saturday at Roman Glass, and nine of those players have had to start today. It’s going to have to be a squad thing if we’re going to have a good season.”
He emphasised the club’s realistic aspirations for the season: “As long as there’s progression, and every year we score more points and finish higher up the league-which would be above tenth and above 51 points-that’ll be progression. The aim is the top eight.”
This result marked only Longlevens’ seventh loss to Tuffley in their last 26 meetings, with Longlevens having claimed 15 wins and four draws in that period.
Longlevens co-manager Peter Boyle acknowledged the challenge of the derby defeat: “It’s extra difficult because it’s the local derby, and it means so much to all of us. Unfortunately, we just weren’t at it from minute one; we were second best to everything, we couldn’t kick ourselves into gear, and Tuffley fully deserved to win.”
Boyle also expressed frustration over the contentious refereeing decision regarding the goalkeeping handball: “I asked the linesman to understand what the referee had seen because all of us saw the goalkeeper rush out of his box and handle the ball. It turns out the referee said the ball didn’t hit his hands at all, which is just nonsense. While it’s not the reason for our poor performance today, it seems to be a running theme lately with referees not giving the correct decisions to either team.”
