Tributes Pour In for Terry Haines, ‘Mr Athletics’ and Former Gloucester Mayor

Terry Haines, affectionately known as “Mr Gloucestershire Athletics,” and a former Mayor and Sheriff of Gloucester, has passed away suddenly at the age of 82. Friends, family, and the wider community have expressed their heartfelt condolences for a man who was deeply loved and respected across the city.

Terry’s legacy stretches beyond his prominent political career; he was a pivotal figure in Gloucester’s athletics scene. He played a crucial role in reviving the Gloucester Athletic Club and was a founding member of Severn Athletic Club, where his passion and dedication went far beyond participation. He was also the key organiser of the Tredworth Road Race, impacting countless runners and sports enthusiasts.

Beyond sports, Terry dedicated many years to teaching at Calton Primary School, nurturing young minds and embodying a spirit of service that extended throughout Gloucester.

Kevin Stephens, former leader of Gloucester City Council and Terry’s nephew, shared poignant memories of his uncle, who passed away on December 22nd while actively planning a race meeting during the holiday season. “Terry was a tremendous asset to the city, respected by all political sides,” Stephens said. “His contributions to both council and athletics have been immense, and he will be sorely missed.”

Terry’s influence reached into Gloucester’s cultural fabric as well, involving folk music, city festivals, and a profound interest in the city’s history. As Mr Stephens highlighted, “If anyone ever needed knowledge about Gloucester’s history and traditions, Terry was the go-to person.”

Severn Athletic Club echoed this sentiment, describing Terry’s death as a devastating loss. “His commitment and passion extended far beyond the club,” the club’s statement read. As a mark of respect, three races scheduled near the holiday period have been cancelled.

Labour MP Alex McIntyre praised Terry as a “true champion for Gloucester," while Labour group leader Terry Pullen recalled his tireless dedication as a councillor and community campaigner. “Despite no longer holding office, Terry remained politically active and was fondly remembered across all political persuasions,” Pullen stated.

Terry Haines leaves behind a legacy defined by service, community spirit, and a lifelong devotion to athletics, culture, and local history. His absence will be deeply felt throughout Gloucester.
