Tributes Pour In for ‘Mr Athletics’ and Former Gloucester Mayor Terry Haines

Terry Haines, affectionately known as “Mr Gloucestershire Athletics,” and a former Mayor and Sheriff of Gloucester, has passed away suddenly at the age of 82. A deeply respected figure in both the political and athletics communities, Terry’s loss has been profoundly felt across the city.

As a dedicated Labour stalwart, Terry played a pivotal role in local politics, serving as a City Councillor from 1995 to 2002 and holding the offices of Mayor and Sheriff. Beyond his political achievements, he was instrumental in reviving Gloucester Athletic Club and was a founding member of Severn Athletic Club. His passion for athletics extended well beyond the clubs, making him a key advocate for the sport throughout Gloucester, the wider county, and the region.

Terry was also the principal organiser of the Tredworth Road Race and devoted many years to education as a teacher at Calton Primary School. His commitment to Gloucester’s cultural life was equally remarkable, with active involvement in folk music, various festivals, and a lifelong enthusiasm for the city’s rich history and traditions.

Kevin Stephens, former Gloucester City Council leader and his nephew, recalled Terry’s unwavering dedication. “He was planning a race meeting over Christmas when he passed,” Kevin said. “Terry was a tremendous asset—respected across all political parties and immensely missed.”

Severn Athletic Club released a heartfelt statement expressing their shock and sorrow, noting Terry’s monumental contribution to the club and athletics community. They announced the cancellation of the three races scheduled for Christmas Day, December 27, and New Year’s Day as a mark of respect.

Gloucester’s Labour MP Alex McIntyre added, “Terry was a true champion for Gloucester and will be missed by many, especially within the Labour Party and the athletics community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Labour group leader at the City Council, Terry Pullen, also paid tribute, highlighting Terry’s extensive political service and his continued commitment after leaving office. “He was known and loved across political lines and will be deeply missed,” Pullen said.

Terry Haines leaves behind a legacy of public service, athletic passion, and community spirit. His warmth, dedication, and knowledge made him a treasured figure in Gloucester, one who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
