Tributes Pour in for ‘Excellent, Kind and Diligent’ Former Councillor Helen Molyneux

The Forest of Dean community has come together to pay heartfelt tributes to Helen Molyneux, a former councillor celebrated for her dedication, kindness, and tireless work, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. Mrs. Molyneux, who served as both an Independent and Conservative councillor for Tidenham, passed away at the age of 82.

On July 24, the Forest of Dean District Council observed a minute’s silence in her memory before Independent group leader Philip Burford led moving tributes to her exemplary service. Burford described Helen as “a wonderful example of what being a councillor truly means,” highlighting her passion not just for her ward but for the wider community.

During the challenging times of the coronavirus pandemic, when the council faced uncertainty, Helen was a steadfast champion for care homes and elderly residents across the district. Philip Burford praised her vigilance and compassion, noting her weekly checks of care homes to ensure their safety and well-being, dubbing her “the old folks champion of the district.”

Known for her distinctive Welsh accent and her ability to deliver insightful comments with gentle tact, Helen was admired for her warmth, personality, and wisdom. Burford’s words captured the deep respect and affection she inspired: “She was a great person, a great personality, a great lady, an excellent councillor—and she will be deeply missed.”

Conservative Councillor Nick Evans recalled how Helen welcomed him warmly as a new parish councillor in Tidenham, easing his transition with kindness and guidance. He praised her dedication to the elderly and her commitment to raising funds and improving care services. “Helen always had a smile on her face. She was genuinely lovely and had a remarkable talent for inspiring people,” Evans reflected.

Former council leader Tim Gwilliam spoke of Helen’s tireless efforts during the pandemic, recalling how she diligently communicated updates about care home conditions and personal protective equipment availability every week without fail. “She showed me nothing but kindness. She was a great councillor, but an even better person,” he said.

Councillor Gill Moseley remembered the warm welcome Helen extended to her as a new councillor, noting the deep humanity she expressed. Green Councillor Christopher McFarling added that Helen was a “voice of sanity” and a compassionate advocate for the community, recalling their shared moments serving meals to senior citizens.

Chairman Di Martin echoed the sentiments of her colleagues, praising Helen’s humanity, kindness, and caring nature, and affirmed she would represent the council at Helen’s funeral.

Helen’s family was deeply moved by the council’s heartfelt tributes. Former Conservative council leader and family member Patrick Molyneux expressed their gratitude, saying, “The entire family was very touched by the kind words shared.”

Helen Molyneux’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 29 at 11 a.m. at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Bulwark, Chepstow.
